Part of our Music In Quiet Places season
A Carnival Calendar
From the riotous pre-Lent carnivals of medieval Europe to the midwinter revelry of the Lord of Misrule, The Carnival Band take us through the year, imaginatively weaving folk, historical and contemporary strands from home and abroad into a rich tapestry of seasonal celebration. Themes of climate, nature, tradition, migration, love and loss are explored with catchy ballads, barn-storming dance tunes and settings of texts ranging from the middle ages to the present.
The Carnival Band play an extraordinary mix of instruments, including medieval shawm, renaissance cittern, Flemish bagpipes, fiddle, bass and add rich vocal harmony. Their unique blend of folk, world, classical and contemporary influences defies definition. Renowned for their recordings and concerts with Maddy Prior, they are admired for their consummate musicianship and loved for their humour and rapport with the audience.
‘The purists must have been squirming. The rest of us were having too much fun to care.’ (York Press)
